What We Have Accomplished...

Equality Hawaii Foundation has devoted significant resources in Hawaii to educating the community on equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. This page details our accomplishments since 2008 for all the members, investors and stakeholders who have donated time, money, expertise and aloha to help us realize our vision of a Hawaii where all LGBT people and their families have equal treatment in all aspects of life.

Community Education:

 •  Served on the team that produced Creating A Safety-Net For LGBT Youth conference that attracted more 190 attendees. More Details >>

 •  Brought real-life stories of LGBT families to the state through Hawaii Family Portraits, a traveling photo exhibit. This unique project has exhibited in more than 28 venues, resulting in more than 389 days of exposure with nearly 100,000 viewers on Oahu, Maui and Kauai. More Details >>

 •  Produced with Lambda Legal and ACLU of Hawaii a guide to civil unions. More Details >>

 •  Produced on on-line listing of civil union officiants on all major islands. More Details >>

 •  Secured nearly $200,000 from local and national funders for education projects.

 •  Hosted an educational program Messaging For Marriage with Lisa Grove of Grove Insight and Adam Bass of GLAAD to help allied organizations and advocates better position our community for pivoting the discussion from civil unions and marriage.

 •  Marched and/or staffed booths at Pride events, the MLK Day Unity Festival, the Honolulu Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and other large volume events throughout the state.

 •  Sponsored the Department of Education's 2011 school calendar, which had an anti-bullying theme. The 11,000 calendars were distributed to all classrooms and administrative offices throughout Hawaii's public schools. See the elementary calendar >> or See the high school calendar >>

 •  Co-hosted with the University of Hawaii's College of Arts & Humanities, UH Richardson Law School and The Interfaith Alliance the panel Courting Equality featuring perspectives from leaders in the social justice, legal, faith and literary communities. See The Video >>

 •  Hosted a workshop and discussion with internationally renowned scholar Prof. William Ayers on utilizing Hawaii Family Portraits as a tool for building a more inclusive cirriculum.

 •  Co-produced with UH's LAMBDA Law Student Association Legal Perspectives on Civil Unions featuring speakers from Lambda Legal, ACLU and Equality Hawaii. Watch Video >>

 •  Co-produced with the UH LAMBDA Law Student Association a talk with Frederick Herta, author of the book Making It Legal: Same Sex Marriage, Domestic Partnerships & Civil Unions. More Details >>

 •  Took action when the UH football coach made a gay slur during a news interview. More Details >>



Outreach:

Faith, Native Hawaiian & Japanese Communities...

 •  Sponsored four Hawaii clergy members to attend Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) Clergy Call, which energized nealry 300 faith leaders from all denominations with a new sense of possibility for change at home and a deeper sense of how their local work could embolden a new dialogue about LGBT people and faith. The Hawaii delegation made national news when they took part in the opening ceremony. More Details >>

 •  Partnered with the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, Honpa Hongwanji, Da Moms and Japanese American Citizens Leage for a "talk story" entitled No Shame. A keynote address from noted actor George Takei (Capt. Sulu from Star Trek) preceeded a panel of LGBT Japanese Americans and parents discussing unique factors they face. George and his husband then joined Equality Hawaii members at a reception. See Photos >>

 •  Produced Malama LGBT 'O Hawaii Maoli, a "talk story" panel discussion featuring Native Hawaiian history regarding LGBT people, the successes and frustrations of LGBT Native Hawaiians and leaders from organizations serving Native Hawaiian people. See Videos >>

 •  Assisted in promoting a resolution supporting extending legal rights, benefits and responsibilities to same-sex couples from Hawaii's largest Buddhist sect, Honpa Hongwanji. More Details >>

 •  Co-produced with The Interfaith Alliance of Hawaii an service with supportive congregations to respond to an anti-civil unions rally at the Capitol. Entitled Celebrate The Dream: Standing For Love, the open and affirming interfaith service balanced media reports that day and illustrated the point that many faith communities welcome LGBT people.  •  Co-sponsored the "talk story" program Engaged Buddhism: relieving Suffering In Our Community with Shin Buddhists. More Details >>

Media Coordination:

 •  Utlized Olelo Community Media to air educational programs and offer on-demand Web viewing.

 •  Launched Equally Speaking, a weekly television show that provides a forum on the people, places and things affecting Hawaii's LGBT community. The show is now broadcast state-wide. View Episodes >>

 •  Coordinated Hawaii's inclusion in the I'm From Driftwood online 50-state tour. More Details >>

 •  Responded to media inquiries from across the globe, resulting in coverage in New Zealand, Europe, Japan, China, Canada, Australia and South America. See The Latest News >>

 •  Developed a Web site that has earned more than 40,000 visits with more than 76,000 page views.
