Alan has been active in the marriage equality movement since 1999, and was legally married to his husband in Ontario, Canada in 2005.

Before moving to Hawaii, Alan served as a district organizer and board member for Love Makes A Family, a statewide non-profit advocacy organization established to secure marriage for same sex couples in Connecticut. He was also active in organizing LGBT cultural events and marriage equality community education programs in northern New York.

Alan has a Master of Social Work with emphases in clinical social work and community organizing, and a Master of Arts in Jewish Studies. Alan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and has his own private psychotherapy practice. Alan also served as co-chair of Equality Hawaii from 2007 to 2009 and from 2010 to late 2011.
